Dr. & Mrs. W. D. Sparrow, the parents of Cpl. William Sparrow, sit on the front porch of their home while doing an interview with LIFE Magazine.  During the interview Dr. Sparrow choked back tears as he said, "I sure would like to hear something from him."

The mother of Pvt. William J. Scanlon sent her son this fruit cake for Christmas, 1941.  It was returned to the family by the post office in May, 1942.  The box had been stamped "Service Suspended."
